Cops Make Arrest in Skokie Shooting Case

Darious Broom of Des Plaines was allegedly showing off the gun to an 18-year-old woman when it accidentally fired.

A 23-year-old Des Plaines man is charged in connection with an accidental Friday night shooting that injured one woman in Skokie.

The Chicago Tribune reports Darious R. Broom, 23 faces one count of aggravated battery with a firearm - a Class X Felony and is being held on a $350,000 bond.

Police responded to the 4700 block of Main Street just before 10:30 p.m. on Friday to a report that a female victim had been shot.

The 18-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries resulting from a gunshot wound to the upper torso, according to police. She was later released.

Police reported that Broom and the victim were acquaintances. Broom allegedly had removed a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and was “showing off” the weapon when it discharged, striking the victim first in the wrist and then in the chest.

Broom will appear in court on Tuesday, May 5.
