District 219 High Schools Ranked 51st, 52nd In Chicago Area

SKOKIE, IL — Niles North High School was ranked No. 51 and Niles West ranked No. 52 among the top high schools in the Chicago metro area, according to U.S. News & World Report. The publication released its rankings of best high schools by metropolitan area Wednesday. Though they are separate from the publication's annual ranking of the nation's top high schools, the latest list was compiled using the same methodology.

The five top-ranked high schools in the area are selective enrollment Chicago Public Schools, each of which made the top 100 schools nationwide.

Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Libertyville was the top suburban high school in the rankings. The District 219 high schools were ranked 41st and 42nd outside of the city of Chicago among the 372 ranked schools in the metro area.

Top 10 suburban schools:

1. Stevenson High School — $19,653 per student
2. Proviso Math and Science Academy (Selective enrollment) — $17,694 per student
3. Libertyville High School — $14,081 per student
4. Hinsdale Central High School — $20,497 per student
5. Hersey High School —$19,921 per student
6. Deerfield High School — $25,520 per student
7. New Trier Township High School —$25,665 per student
8. Glenbrook North High School —$23,141 per student
9. Prospect High School — $19,921 per student
10. Neuqua Valley High School — $11,848 per student.

Annual per student spending numbers for each district come from the Illinois State Board of Education, which reports a state average of about $13,337 in operational spending per student every year. Indiana education officials do not report annual per pupil operational spending.

U.S. News said it matched metro areas with corresponding core-based statistical areas, which include both metropolitan and micropolitan areas (with populations of 10,000 and 50,000) They can include portions of multiple states, and the Chicago area includes schools in Indiana and Wisconsin.

“We’ve heard from students, parents and school officials that they’re interested in seeing how their school compares with others in the community,” Robert Morse, chief data strategist at U.S. News, said in a news release. “With these new rankings, residents in more than 900 metro areas nationwide can see which local schools are succeeding at educating and graduating their students.”
