Ex-Skokie Cop Stole Bail Money, Prosecutors Say
The 11-year veteran of Skokie Police Department admitted he stole from people he arrested.

CHICAGO, IL — A former Skokie cop confessed he twice stole bail money from arrestees because he was in "financial peril" now faces official misconduct charges, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Mitchell Smaller, 36, was dismissed from his position after 11 years with the Skokie Police Department after stealing $450 and failing to submit police reports, Cook County prosecutors said Thursday.
He's accused of arresting one person for shoplifting and keeping the $150 bail they posted on May 9, 2015. Then, just over two weeks later, he arrested a driver, drove the passenger to an ATM, then pocketed $300 in bail money, according to prosecutors.

When the theft was discovered by an employee in the Cook County Clerk's office in June, Smaller returned the money, prosecutors said.
