Excessive Heat Warning - Be Careful During Summer Heat and Be Safe

The National Weather Service has issued an "Excessive Heat Watch" and is expected to continue through July 22.

The National Weather Service has issued an “Excessive Heat Watch” and is expected to continue through July 22. Heat Advisories, at a minimum, are likely for the remainder of the week. During high heat conditions, the Skokie Health Department recommends the following:

• Use a buddy system to check in on family, neighbors, and friends;

• If possible, plan activities for the coolest times of the day (early morning and late afternoon);

• Drink plenty of fluids;

• Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing outdoors;

• NEVER leave children or pets in a parked car; and

• Protect your pets. Make sure your pet always has cool, clean water and a shaded area to rest if left outside

The following public locations are typically available for cooling in Skokie. If closed, cooling should be sought in available locations with air conditioning:

Illinois Department of Human Services at 8020 St. Louis, Skokie, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Skokie Public Library at 5215 Oakton St. Skokie, 847/673-7774. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 12 to 6 p.m.

Skokie Park District:

The Skatium at 9300 Weber Park Place (at the rear of the building), Skokie,

847/674-1500 ext. 2900. Sunday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.,

Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Oakton Park Community Center at 4701 Oakton Street Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
