'How Did You Get Me So Fast?', Alleged Skokie Bank Robber Asks Cops

An Evanston man faces federal charges after he was caught just minutes after allegedly making off with $10,000 from First Bank and Trust.

SKOKIE, IL - A teller's quick thinking by including a GPS tracker in the bills handed over to the man accused of robbing the First Bank and Trust on Skokie Boulevard on Tuesday resulted in an arrest within minutes and had the alleged robber asking police in the north suburb: "How did you get me so fast?"

Gary D. Gaines, 36, of Evanston was charged with a federal count of bank robbery Tuesday after he was nabbed by Skokie police just minutes after reports indicate he robbed the First Bank and Trust at 8047 Skokie Blvd. at gunpoint.

Gaines allegedly was let into the bank around 5:50 p.m. by a teller, then reached the teller window with a silver handgun and uttered "Don't look. Don't look. Give me everything," according to FBI special agent Herbert Hogberg, who filed federal charges in the United States District Court of Northern Illinois on Wednesday.

According to the charges, when confronted, the teller gave Gaines approximately $10,000, but included 25 bait bills and a GPS tracker in the loot. The Skokie Police Department arrived on scene immediately and was led to Gaines' location through the GPS tracker after setting up a perimeter in the area.

They arrested Gaines in the 8000 block of Kenton Avenue after matching him to a description provided by the tellers at the bank.
