Copley was the most sought after portraitist in 18th century America and our country's first Old Master who captured the spirit and likeness of our pre-revolutionary elite in his glowing paintings. His pictures captured the gleam of finely crafted table tops, sheen of taffeta, softness of hair, and gleam of eyes. They were key agents in late colonial expressions of identity, class, and character and captured the direct, proud gazes of independent colonial women. Come and explore the life and times of Copley before he departed for London on the eve of the Revolutionary War.
