Labor Day 2017: What's Open, What's Closed In Skokie

Plus, some fun things to do in Chicagoland during the long weekend.

SKOKIE, IL — The dog days of summer are winding down, and we get one last weekend before the school year and fall activities get into full swing. Labor Day 2017 is Monday, Sept. 4. And while it's a day of rest and relaxation for many, it's also a federal holiday, meaning many local services and offices will be closed.

Here's a roundup of what's closed and what will be open, plus a look at some fun events happening in Chicagoland.

Open

Most big-box retailers will be open — and many are offering Labor Day deals — but smaller businesses and mom and pop stores might be closed, so it's a good idea to call ahead.

Trash pickup

There will be no refuse or recycling collection Monday in Skokie. The Labor Day refuse and recycling collection schedules will push each day's collection back one day, such that Monday collection will take place on Tuesday, Tuesday collection on Wednesday, while Thursday and Friday collections will remain unchanged.

All yard waste collections must be pre-scheduled by visiting www.skokie.org or calling 847-933-3333 by noon on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. The next yard waste collections for all residences will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2017. (Grass clippings and dirt are not collected.)
