Visit this three-cornered island in the sun, lapped by three seas, in the middle of the Mediterranean. Since ancient times Sicily has been the meeting point and melting pot of different peoples and races: Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Phoenicians, and Normans who each left their indelible mark. See splendid architectural monuments, works of art, and beautiful scenery. Begin in Catania with a visit to the nearby Roman villa Piazza Armerina, famous for magnificent mosaics. Then on to the great Norman Cathedral of Cefalu. See Palermo with the Norman Palace, Palatine Chapel, Martorana, and the Monreale Cathedral with its stunning mosaics glinting with gold. Explore the Greek temple and theater at Segesta, the medieval town of Erice high on Mount San Giuliano, the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento, and the 'jet set' destination of Taormina. Lastly, ride up the slopes of the still active volcanic Mt. Etna, whose ominous red glow lights up Sicilian nights.
