Man Charged With Felony DUI In Deadly Crash On Edens Expressway
A 41-year-old unlicensed Zion man was driving under the influence when he fatally struck a pedestrian, according to state police.
CHICAGO — A Zion man was ordered held without bond Sunday on charges he was driving drunk when he struck and killed a pedestrian on the Edens Expressway in Skokie, according to Illinois State Police.
Marco A. Vital-Tapia, 41, of Zion, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence in a crash involving death, police said. He was driving a gray Honda that veered off the expressway and onto the shoulder before fatally striking a man.
Around 3:09 p.m. on Friday, a tractor-trailer had pulled over to the right shoulder on southbound Interstate 94 at Dempster Street. The driver and a passenger had gotten out of the car, and the truck's driver climbed on top of the trailer to inspect the load, police said.

Vital-Tapia continued driving about a mile down the road after hitting Khalil, who was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
According to Lake County court records, Vital-Tapia also has a pending charge of driving without a license and a speeding ticket issued after a November 2018 traffic stop in Zion. No further information about other citations or charges he faces in connection with Khalil's death was immediately available from state police. He is due back in court in Skokie on April 23.
