Niles Township Property Tax Appeal Workshops Offered In Skokie

SKOKIE, IL — The window for property owners in Niles Township to appeal their new 2019 tax assessments to the Cook County Board of Review opens Monday and runs for the next four weeks.

The Cook County assessor's office fully reassessed north suburban townships this year. Last week, the office certified and published its assessment roll for Niles Township, so taxpayers may now only appeal their properties new assessed values to the Board of Review.

Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, 13th District, announced plans to hold three property tax appeal workshops in Skokie in the first week of the window.

"The best way to keep your property taxes low is to appeal your assessment annually to both the Assessor and the Board of Review," Suffredin said, announcing the workshop. "I encourage you to reach out to my office so we can assist with your appeal."

The first two appeal workshops are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday at Skokie Village Hall, 5127 Oakton St., in the lower-level community room. Reservations are required, with appointments available from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by calling 312-603-6383.

The third planned workshop is set for 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 16 in the auditorium of the Skokie Public Library, 5215 Oakton St. No reservations are required.

Other workshop sponsors include Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Michael Cabonargi, Niles Township Assessor Scott Bagnall, state Senators Laura Fine and Ram Villivalam, local state Representatives John D'Amico, Jen Gong-Gershowitz and Yehiel "Mark" Kalish, and Mayors Barry Bass of Lincolnwood, Dan DiMaria of Morton Grove, Andrew Przybylo of Niles and George Van Dusen of Skokie.

The Cook County Board of Appeals is accepting appeals through Jan. 7, 2020. It is the venue for citizens to appeal decisions made by the assessor's office, which the board can correct by issuing certificates of error. Decisions by the board can be further appealed to Cook County Circuit Court or the Illinois Property Tax Appeals Board.
