Niles West Staffer Overpaid For Years Must Pay Back Cash

A settlement between a library clerk and District 219 gives the employee 4 years to pay back half the money, or else the rest comes due.

SKOKIE, IL — A part-time clerk at the Niles West High School library who was accidentally overpaid for years has to pay back $33,266 to the school district under the terms of a settlement agreement adopted by the Niles Township High School District 219 board this month, Pioneer Press reported. That's half of the total amount of extra money she was inadvertently paid after the district mistakenly classifying her as a full time employee.

The settlement said the district will deduct $316.82 from the employee's biweekly paycheck starting this month and as long as she continues to work for the district, the Skokie Review reported. If she fails to repay the half of the extra $66,531 she was mistakenly paid by July 2023, she will have to pay back the "entire remaining balance."

The district said detected the issue recently after putting new internal auditing measures in place, according to the Skokie Review. In a statement, officials attributed the mistake to the departure of a human resources staffer who would manually set pay rate codes for employees.
