Featured obituary:
Barbara Schaefer Dhein was born into eternal life August 13 surrounded by loved ones. She was 91.
Barbara was born in Wilmette to George and Helen Schaefer on February 5, 1927. She grew up in an extended family who were among the descendants of Wilmette’s founding immigrants from Trier, Germany.
Living in Wilmette most of her life, her warm hospitality, thoughtful generosity, and deep-seated faith were contagious and admired by all who knew her.

She graduated from Marywood High School and married her high school sweetheart, Jim Dhein, after he returned from service in WWII. Her deep affection and appreciation for family and roots anchored her life’s commitment to her own family and to those dearest to her, including the many who were welcomed to the family home over the years. She imparted a strong faith to her family and was a minister in her parish and to all she encountered.
Barbara found a successful career and dear friends in the banking world, and she retired as a vice-president from BMO Harris. In retirement, her vast interests included travel, yoga, golf, bridge, tai chi, and zoomba. Her worn library card is a testament to her love for good stories, lively conversation, and contributions at book club. Many marveled at this super senior who was vital into her 90’s. She will be missed by her treasured friends with whom she shared so much of her active life.
Deeply grateful for her faithful and generous life are her children Mary Ryan, Barbara Dhein, Liz (Jerry) Fiore, Genevieve (Steven) Matteucci, and James (Annette) Dhein; her grandchildren Michael, Patrick, Kathleen, Craig, Mark, Kurt, James, Elaine, Phillip, and Jack; her great grandchildren Matthew, Jake, Grace, C.J., Kiera, Dominic, Samuel, Davis, and Leo; her sister Gene Flynn and sisters-in-law Cookie (Ruth) Schaefer and Joanne Dhein; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband James A. Dhein and her daughter Kathleen Dhein Puls, her stepmother Eileen Schaefer Haas, her sisters Suzanne McConnell and Anita Wadden, her brother George Schaefer, her brother-in-law Donald Dhein, and her dear friend Jim Licata.
Visitation Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass 1 p.m. at Saint Francis Xavier Church, 912 Linden Ave. in Wilmette.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are appreciated to Journey Care Hospice, 2050 Claire Court, Glenview, IL 60025 or The Greater Chicago Food Depository, 4100 West Ann Lurie Place Chicago, IL 60632.
