Featured Obituary:

Gerald G Humbert, 70, creative artist and photographer of Mount Prospect, died of acute pericarditis, a complication from primary sclerosing cholangitis Thursday, Aug. 3rd in his home.

Born and raised on the North Side of Chicago, Gerald grew up enjoying summers at the family cabin in Wabeno, Wisconsin. Gerry had several family members that he would play with, and enjoyed building things and blowing them up.

After graduating Carl Schurz High School in Chicago, he worked for and was mentored by Owen Deutsch photography before opening his own studio.

“Despite not going to college, my father was one of the most intellectual and educated men that I knew. He had a voracious thirst for knowledge, liked being challenged, and was constantly reading,” said his daughter Heather.

Gerry worked with many photography clients, but a favorite was Marshall Fields where he worked with several fashion models like Beth Hyatt and other celebrities such as Bob Hope and Charlton Heston.

After the birth of his twin daughters, Gerry closed his studio to photograph full time for the toy/hobby company Revell Monogram. He worked with them for 35 years, leading their photography departments and learned how to transition from film to digital and added re-touching and photo manipulation to his skills. While at Revell, he made several life-long friends.

Gerry was a lifelong car enthusiast. As a child he played with cars, as a young adult he owned several cars, including a Karmann Gia, as an employee he photographed race cars and model cars, and as a retiree he enjoyed photographing hot rods.

He constantly studied and was inspired by the writings of Oscar Wilde, P.G. Woodehouse, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and more contemporary work by authors such as Tom Wolfe and Alexander McCall Smith. As Oscar Wilde said, and Gerry often practiced: “Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but the highest form of intelligence.”

Gerry had several other interests as well over the years. Illuminated manuscripts, castles & medieval warfare, boxing, racehorses, southwest/New Mexican art, cranes, and music. Most recently he enjoyed shooting still life’s in his home studio. Not only did Gerry love photography; he was always creating: wooden furniture, written quotes, sketches of his loved ones, and Photoshop paintings of anything that inspired him. He saw the extraordinary in the everyday.

He loved going to museums and art fairs. Only Gerry would go to an art show downtown…on the same day as the Cubs Worlds Series Championship parade. Despite not being a Cubs fan, or a sports fan of any type, or even a fan of crowds-Gerry braved the 5th estimated largest gathering of humanity… in the name of art.

A wicked sense of humor often translated to his personal photography projects, and is what many friends and family remember about him.

Gerry was very loved by many and will be missed. Proud father of Heather and Robin Humbert, and Beth (Marc) Schmidt. Loving grandfather to Lenea and Saana Price, and Hugo Schmidt. Beloved son to Della and the late Gunther "Ginn" Humbert. Loyal brother to Richard Humbert and Susan (Art) Manaois. Caring uncle to Alex, Mae, and Mary Manaois.
