Featured Obituary:

Sharon Zick Rieger, died on December 29, 2019. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Sharon was a people person who was interested in everyone she met. Her friendly, inquisitive and loving manner helped her quickly learn important things about others.

Born and raised in Winnetka, IL, Sharon attended Crow Island School and Skokie School. She was a member of the first high school class to graduate after four years at New Trier West High School. At the age of 11, Sharon participated in the ground breaking ceremony for the Winnetka Presbyterian Church. After graduating from Briarcliff College and then Simpson College in 1973, Sharon returned to the North Shore to live and work, as a bank teller, teacher and later as an accountant. Sharon met Brian, her husband of 45 years, at bank teller school and each was quickly smitten with the other. They were inseparable from then on.Sharon was a member of Pi Beta Phi fraternity and continued to support the Pi Beta Phi Foundation throughout her lifetime. She was also a longtime supporter of Epilepsy Services of Northeastern Illinois (ESNI) and of Children’s Memorial Foundation.

A prolific needlepointer and knitter, Sharon devoted much of her time to creating beautiful works of needlepoint and knitting, which she then shared generously with family and friends. Her home at Christmas was filled with needlepoint crèche scenes, Santas and Christmas trees. She also inherited her grandmother’s (Elsie Sutter) green thumb and had blooming orchids in her home at every point in the year and an abundant vegetable and flower garden throughout the summer. Sharon was a gracious and generous hostess who loved to cook and share new recipes with family and friends. An avid canasta player, Sharon enjoyed a weekly game with dear friends, but her greatest joy in recent years came from spending time laughing, swimming and playing with her two grand daughters, Ella and Annabelle.
