Featured Obituary:

Mary Skuce Hourican passed away in the early morning hours of February 8, 2022, after courageously battling Alzheimer’s Disease for fifteen years. She was cared for by staff members at the Glenview Terrace Nursing Home.

Mary was born in 1941, in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, to parents Thomas and Esther Spicer Skuce. Mary met Sean while working as a ticket agent for Aer Lingus Airlines in Birmingham. They married in 1967 and moved to the United States soon thereafter. They lived in Washington D.C. and Toronto before settling in Wilmette, where they made lifelong friends and spent many happy years in their home on Gregory Avenue.

Mary stayed home to raise the kids while they were young. She was a devoted mother and enjoyed cooking meals for the family from scratch, including her memorable version of Irish Stew. She loved spending time outdoors, with the beach being a favorite spot. She was also an avid and enthusiastic gardener. Brimming with flowers and plants, her gardens surrounded all sides of the house with vegetables out back.

Mary returned to work part-time at the Wilmette Public Library and the Royal Welcome. She then worked full-time in the offices of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, from which she retired. Her friendly nature and love of a good chat served her well in these jobs.

She was also immensely proud of her English heritage and never missed a moment to talk about her homeland when someone noticed her accent. She was quick on her feet in conversation and could make you laugh (or run for your life) with the "Mary stare". Known as Granny to her beloved grandchildren, she cherished being a grandmother. Many visits were made to New Jersey and Wisconsin to dote on her six grandsons and one granddaughter.
