James O. Nolan passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, in the house he loved, surrounded by the books he cherished, with his wife Cathy by his side.

Jim was born on November 22, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Eileen (nee McNally) and John T. ("Sandy") Nolan. The eldest of four children, Jim grew up in a close-knit Irish Catholic family on Chicago's South Side. He attended Leo High School (1957), followed by DePaul University (1961), before joining the United States Army. After receiving an honorary discharge, Jim attended DePaul University College of Law (1966), and upon graduation, joined the law firm of Clausen, Miller, Gorman, Caffrey & Witous, P.C.. He worked at Clausen Miller for more than 40 years, helping to grow it into a nationally-recognized law firm.

Jim and his wife Cathy met and fell in love when Cathy was the resident guitar-playing waitress at The Mushroom, Jim's local neighborhood hangout. After Cathy passed the surreptitious background check performed by Jim's father, Chicago Police Detective Sandy Nolan, they were married. Married for 51 years, Jim and Cathy raised three children and shared a keen devotion to family and friends.

Jim was a master storyteller, knew all the best restaurants and bars in New York, London, Paris and San Francisco, and always maintained the secret of life was having your next trip planned. He loved horse racing, and spent many hours at Arlington Racetrack, poring over the Racing Form, always in search of that next great bet. His great joys in life were his family, his work as a lawyer, traveling the world with his wife, and sharing candy and laughter with his grandchildren.
