Featured Obituary:
Linda L. Fleming, age 93, of Evanston. Beloved wife to the late Harold R. Fleming. Loving mother of Robert (Adva) Fleming and the late Barbara (Richard) Nisbet . Dear Grandmother of Jennifer (Steve) Latch, Colin (Jennifer) Jensen, Michael Fleming, and Mick Nisbet. Great Grandmother of Chloe, Ella, and Phoebe Latch. Linda was born at the Elephant and Castle, S. London. It was in that area that she lost her family in a bombing raid in 1940. She survived the tragedy of being trapped for two days in a collapsed Anderson Air raid shelter. Later the shelter from which she was rescued was reassembled and sent to New York as a part of an exhibit.

Linda attended Bloomsbury Art School, from there she studied negative engraving and worked for the British War Office in Cheltenham. Later she worked for the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers as a negative engraver and it was there she met her husband HAP (short for happy-go-lucky). They were married in 1944. Linda continued to work for the U.S. Army in the annex of Selfridges and the Army P.S. in Mount St. until she came to this country in 1945. Linda traveled on the Queen Mary with 3,000 service wives and children. This was one of the first ships to leave Britain with War Brides after the war ended. She remembers looking forward to the excitement of a shopping spree on her arrival in New York only to find that apart from strikes, everything was shut down due to fuel shortage.
Linda and her husband lived for a short time in Bristol, West Virginia (which is where Hap was from) before coming to the D.C. area in 1946. Before the children came, Linda worked for the Army Map Service, and for the Navy Hydrographic Service. Hap was employed at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving in D.C. He planned to retire in 1981 and hoped to enjoy a leisurely life of boating and fishing.
Linda had many hobbies which included: crotchet, knitting, and reading. She loved the theater and movies, and swam year round. She enjoyed cooking and took courses in French Gourmet cuisine.
