Featured Obituary:

Honorable John S. “PJ” Pope, age 74, of Wilmette. Passed away on November 9, 2021. Beloved husband of Eileen Pope nee Kelly. Loving father of Shannon (Aaron) Bukta, Patrick Pope, Mary (CR Russell) Pope, Stephen (Suzy) Pope, Maureen Pope and Michael Pope. Adoring grandpa of Ronan, Mary Jane, Julia, Hope, Talulla, Cormac, Cillian, Fergus, Elisabeth, Johnny, and Matthew. Dear brother to Marian Hunter, Patrick Pope, the late Michael Pope, and the late Tony Pope.

Born in Washington D.C., John (PJ) was the second of five children born to Mary and Joseph Pope. He attended Assumption Grade School and Archbishop Carroll High School.

Following his freshman year at the University of Maryland, PJ enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War. While there, he distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions during a rocket attack at his base. For his actions, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Purple Heart Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and two Vietnam campaign ribbons. In addition, he was awarded Soldier of the Month three times.

After Vietnam, he attended the University of Dayton, where he graduated with BA in Political Science in 1971. He then went on to serve as a Sky Marshal for the United States government.

PJ attended law school at the John Marshall School of Law where he earned his J.D. and L.L.M. A life-long learner, he then completed his MBA at the University of Chicago.

PJ loved his role as the Chief Administrative Law Judge of the Chicago National Hearing Center for the Social Security Administration (SSA), where he worked for over 20 years. The many friends he made over his years at the SSA were very important to him.

In addition to his family and career, PJ loved playing in his summer tennis league at the Old Willow Club. He truly was successful at everything in life, except for tennis. But he never gave up.
