Featured Obituary:

Leonard Kohn, DVM, 96, of Vernon Hills, IL, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, October 18, 2017. Leonard was born Jan. 22, 1921, in Cleveland to David and Sarah Kohn, Hungarian immigrants who owned and operated their own restaurant.

Growing up, Leonard assisted his parents with their business before moving to Columbus, Ohio, to attend the Ohio State University. After spending a year at OSU, Leonard moved to the Boston area, where he attended Middlesex University, earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1944.

He then moved to Highland Park, Illinois, where a restaurant would again play an important role in his life. His persistent romantic pursuit of a hostess at one of his favorite Highland Park establishments paid off, eventually convincing the young woman to marry him. Cleo and Leonard wed in 1951 and later welcomed daughters Ann and Beth.

In the early 1950s, Leonard opened Kohn Animal Hospital in Highland Park and was widely admired for his devotion to the animals he saw. In later years, no matter where he was — at home in Highland Park, vacationing in Los Angeles, or boarding a double-decker bus in London — current and former clients would recognize him, stopping to ask if he remembered their pets. (Leonard always recalled his animal patients, but not necessarily their human counterparts.) He sold his veterinary practice and retired in 1986.

Leonard had many talents throughout life, though anyone who heard his attempts at holiday caroling would agree that music was not his forte. “Captain Lenny” enjoyed many nights with his bowling league friends, and he was an avid golfer throughout life, switching to miniature golf after his three granddaughters were born so he could teach them the importance of patiently lining up a putt.

Well into his 80s, Leonard could be found volunteering at the Chicago Botanic Garden, where he tended to the rose gardens. Until his final days, Leonard rooted for his beloved Chicago Cubs.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Gladys. He is survived by his wife, Cleo; daughters Ann (Todd) Keil of Vernon Hills and Beth (John) Keister of Vernon Hills; granddaughters Sarah (Dan) Armstrong of Libertyville, Greta (Brad) Mann of Wauconda, and Mary Keister (Peter Nencka) of Columbus, Ohio; and great-grandchildren Milo, Audrey and Natalie.

Friends and family are invited to join us for a celebration of Leonard’s life on Saturday, December 16, from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Arboretum Club, 401 Half Day Road, Buffalo Grove.
