Possible Road Collapse Reported in Niles

A possible roadway collapse in Niles Monday morning has two northbound lanes of Waukegan Road closed at a major intersection.

Members of a construction crew working on tearing down the old Traveler’s Inn to make room for a new Holiday Inn Express near Waukegan Road and Milwaukee Avenue noticed the problem with the roadway at about 11:35 a.m., according to the Journal & Topics newspaper. They closed Waukegan’s northbound curb lane and called police who later closed both northbound lanes.

The remaining southbound lanes were divided, allowing one lane for northbound traffic and the other for southbound traffic. No estimate has been given for when the two lanes may re-open.
