Skokie Cop Shoots Twice At Resident After Burglar Alarm: Police

An officer fired twice at an allegedly armed resident of Optima Old Orchard Woods Thursday evening.

SKOKIE, IL — Skokie police said an officer fired a gun at an armed resident inside Optima Old Orchard Thursday evening. Shortly before 8 p.m. a pair of cops showed up to investigate a burglar alarm inside one of the condos at 9715 Woods Dr. Police arrived to find the burglar alarm "activated" and the front hallway door to be "unsecured," according to a news release.

The release said they made "repeated attempts" to "contact anyone inside" but no one answered the door. So they "positioned themselves" in the hallway, moments before an man allegedly armed with a handgun "presented himself" in the threshold of the door.

One of cops fired his gun twice but did not hit the man, who "immediately complied with verbal commands to drop his weapon." It turned out he was a resident of the condo, police said. After firing at him, cops took the man into custody.

"Further investigation revealed" that he lived there, and police released the man without charges, "pending a continuing investigation."

Both officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, which is being led by Skokie police. Had the officer hit the resident, the shooting would be investigated by the Illinois State Police.

Officer Eric Swaback said Monday he did not know if the officers asked the man to drop his weapon before firing, who opened the door or how much, if any, noise the alarm was making at the time.

Police said there were no injuries from the incident and it is unlikely that charges will be filed.
