Skokie Man On Probation For Hate Crime Jailed After Racist Slur
A judge found he violated probation when he was expelled from a court-ordered program after using a slur while threatening a man with a bat.

SKOKIE, IL — A judge ordered a Skokie man convicted of an anti-Semitic hate crime last year to be held without bond after determining he violated the terms of his probation. The Skokie Review reported prosecutors seeking to revoke his probation told the court he used a racial slur, threatened to assault a man with a baseball bat and tested positive for cocaine.
Alvin Dawod, 29, of the 8200 block of Laramie Avenue, was already on probation last year for a previous theft conviction on the afternoon of May 7 when police say he ran toward a 45-year-old Chicago man in a bank parking lot and began shouting anti-Semitic slurs and profanity at the man, who was wearing a yarmulke. Police said he also caused more than $500 in damage by kicking the bumper of the man's car.
Dawod was sentenced to 30 months of probation on Sept. 4 after entering a negotiated plea of guilty to two felonies — hate crime and criminal damage. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped a charge of disorderly conduct.

On top of the 2½ years of probation, Judge Michael Hood sentenced Dawod to 120 days in Cook County Jail and 40 days with the Cook County Sheriff Office's work release program. Dawod was ordered to take part in hate crime education, anger management, mental health evaluation, alcohol and drug treatment and random drug testing. He was also ordered to pay $2,250 in restitution, and the judge gave him a daily curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Prosecutors this week said he violated at least two terms of that sentence.
Dawod was also ordered not to contact the victim, who had earlier asked the judge and prosecution not to send Dawod to prison. Prosecutors previously told the Review they had planned to seek a three-year prison sentence due to Dawod's prior probation violation. He is due back in court March 23, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, Prosecutors said Dawod was kicked out of a court-mandated counseling program after using a racial slur while threatening a man, who was black, with a baseball bat, according to the Skokie Review. He also violated the terms of his probation two months in, prosecutors said, when he tested positive for cocaine.
