Stray Bullet Strikes Male Motorist Parked Near Oakton Street, Police Say

Police said he was not the intended target of the shooter, who was gone before officers arrived.

SKOKIE, IL — Police asked the public for information about a shooting Thursday in Skokie.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a call of gunfire in the 4500 block of Oakton Street, according to police. When they arrived, they reported finding a 37-year-old Chicago man who had been shot in his left shoulder.

Police said the shooter was no longer at the scene, but a preliminary investigation indicated that there had been some kind of altercation on the west side of the building at the northeast corner of Oakton Street and Kenton Avenue. The argument "culminated" with shots fired, according to a statement from police.

"The victim was sitting inside a vehicle parked in the area and was not involved in the altercation," it said.

The Skokie Fire Department took the person who was shot to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, according to police. His injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

Police said no one is in custody in connection with the shooting and asked anyone with information about it to call the department.

Investigators have not determined the nature of the altercation, but at least two people were involved and more than a dozen shell casings were found at the scene, according to a Skokie police spokesperson.

No description of any suspects or suspect vehicles was available from police, who are continuing to investigate how many people fired shots.
