Rodgers and Hammerstein's last show - written in 1959, the year before Hammerstein died - was a Broadway success despite mixed reviews. Some critics thought the show overly sentimental. And it took the phenomenally popular movie version six years later to place The Sound of Music beyond criticism. The show became, to later generations, Rodgers and Hammerstein's best-loved musical.
