At NSSC, Northfield Location:
Jim Kenney, Executive Director, Common Ground
One of our most admired, even beloved, presidents, Thomas Jefferson is also one of the most controversial. Progressives hail his separation of Church and State and the liberalism that set him apart from many of his day. Tea Partiers cite him as the inspiration for their hatred of government. One of the first exponents of what would become the American two-party system, he was a ferocious and, arguably, unfair campaigner. A champion of liberty, he owned slaves and, with James Madison, sought to postpone the discussion of slavery until well after the founding period. In short, TJ remains a bit of an enigma. Jim will examine some of the controversies surrounding the man and try to put the third president in sharper focus.
