WILMETTE, Ill. – U.S. Coast Guard Station
Wilmette Harbor will hold an open house at 10 Harbor Drive, in Wilmette, Ill.,
near Gillson Park, Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., celebrating the
kickoff of National Safe Boating Week.
The Coast Guard urges boaters to pay
attention to boating behavior, especially the importance of always wearing a
life jacket.

The open house will include free
presentations about water safety, environmental protection, seamanship,
communications, weather, and knot tying. It also includes tours of the station,
boats, and equipment displays. There will be face painting for toddlers.
Boating safety pamphlets and brochures will be available for all attendees. The
boating public can learn about the free Vessel Safety Check program, courtesy
of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel
will also demonstrate proper equipment use.
The goal of National Safe Boating Week is
to heighten awareness among recreational boaters of the importance of boating
responsibly and wearing a life jacket at all times and the range of options
available with today’s modern lifejackets. Some options include new inflatable
versions that offer a complete range of movement.
