At NSSC, Northfield Location:
Jim Kenney, Executive Director, Common Ground
While its political star has lost much of its luster, the
Tea Party 'movement' has had a significant influence on the American political
scene. It has lifted extremists into prominence, dramatically transformed - and
paralyzed - the House of Representatives, and forced the U.S. government into
crisis mode on several occasions. These several phenomena have generated a remarkable
backlash within the GOP, which is still playing out in this election year. This
workshop will touch on issues of this sort, but the primary focus will be on
the Tea Party's radical distortion of American history, in particular the
period of the country's founding. Jim will draw on historian Jill Lepore's book
The Whites of Their Eyes, a powerful
account of Tea Party revisionism, and will engage a wide range of topics,
including interpretation of the Constitution, separation of Church and State,
and the founders' views on government.
