Wisconsin Officials Will Address Skokie Woman's Claims That ICE Detained Her For 2 Days

A Skokie woman last month alleged that federal immigration officials held her for two days and transported her to Wisconsin.

SKOKIE, IL — Wisconsin authorities announced they plan to release new information about a Skokie woman's claims that federal immigration officials held her for two days in multiple states.

Last month, Summer Sundas "Sunny" Naqvi named Dodge County, Wisconsin as one of three places she was detained after returning to O'Hare airport from a work trip to Turkey on March 5.

However, when the Chicago Tribune contacted the company listed as her employer on LinkedIn, a German software company, it said Naqvi had never been employed there and none of its employees had been detained at O'Hare.

Naqvi said she and five others were detained by federal agents and were held at the airport for 30 hours before being brought to the Broadview detention center. Family and supporters of Naqvi said she was then transported to the Dodge County Jail in Wisconsin.

She claimed she was released in the early morning hours of March 7 and then hitchhiked to a hotel in Beaver Dam, where her family met her.

DHS addressed the claims on social media, calling Naqvi's claims blatantly false. According to Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection officers referred Naqvi for additional inspection of her baggage based on law enforcement checks.

In a March 9 statement, Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said there was no record of Naqvi having ever been booked, detained or released from the Dodge County Jail. At the time, Schmidt asked Naqvi and others to reach out to the Sheriff's Office to provide additional information about the allegation and obtain evidence.

"The Sheriff’s Office takes any allegation involving jail operations seriously. We have been and will continue to review the circumstances surrounding this claim to ensure a complete understanding of what occurred," Schmidt said in the statement. "We encourage anyone who believes they have evidence related to this matter to provide that information—along with any available electronic metadata—to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office so it can be properly evaluated."

In a news release shared Thursday, Schmidt said a press conference is scheduled for Friday afternoon. The conference aims to address Naqvi's claims and give an in-depth overview of the matter.
