Stolen Cars Pull Doors Off 20 Businesses, ATMs, Smokes, Swiped: Cops

CHICAGO — At least 20 incidents of commercial burglaries involving using a stolen vehicle to pull off the door have been reported around the South Side. The incidents took place between Aug. 2 and Aug. 25.

A burglary crew gains entry to the businesses by placing a chain on the front door and using a stolen vehicle to pull off the door. The crew then enters the businesses, removing cash registers, ATMs, tobacco products and other miscellaneous items, Chicago police said.

• 1900 Block of East 95th St on August 6, 2024 at 4:30 a.m.
• 12200 Block of South Halsted St on August 6, 2024 at 5:30 a.m.
• 100 Block of East 75th Street on August 6, 2024 at 6:04 a.m.
• 1800 Block of East 87th St on August 9, 2024 at 2:44 a.m.
• 11600 Block of South Halsted St on August 9, 2024 at 5:50 a.m.
• 12200 Block of South Michigan Ave on August 9, 2024 at 6:35 a.m.
• 800 Block of East 87th St on August 10, 2024 at 5 a.m.
• 400 Block of East 83rd St on August 14, 2024 at 5:20 a.m.
• 200 Block of West 119th St on August 16, 2024 at 6:14 a.m.
• 1800 Block of West 87th St on August 17, 2024 at 5:57 a.m.
• 1800 Block of East 87th St on August 21, 2024 at 4:47 a.m.
• 800 Block of West 119th St on August 21, 2024 at 5:37 a.m.
• 8400 Block of South Vincennes Ave on August 22, 2024 at 4 a.m.
• 1100 Block of West 95th St on August 22, 2024 at 4:45 a.m.
• 300 Block of East 103rd St on August 24, 2024 at 2:40 a.m.
• 1100 Block of west 111th St on August 24, 2024 at 4:13 a.m.
• 11000 Block of South Wentworth Ave on August 24, 2024 at 5:53 a.m.
• 300 Block of West 119th St on August 24, 2024 at 5:55 a.m.
• 400 Block of East 75th St on August 25, 2024 at 5:52 a.m.

Police believe four to eight people clad in dark clothing, including hoodies and masks have been breaking into the businesses.

What businesses can do:

• Keep the perimeter of your property well lit.
• Report suspicious activity immediately.
• Keep doors and windows secured.
• Immediately repair any broken windows, doors or locks.
• If video surveillance is available, save and make a copy of the incident for investigating detectives.
• If you have been burglarized, don’t touch anything and call police immediately
• If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information.
