Stolen Cars Pull Doors Off 20 Businesses, ATMs, Smokes, Swiped: Cops

CHICAGO — At least 20 incidents of commercial burglaries involving using a stolen vehicle to pull off the door have been reported around the South Side. The incidents took place between Aug. 2 and Aug. 25.

A burglary crew gains entry to the businesses by placing a chain on the front door and using a stolen vehicle to pull off the door. The crew then enters the businesses, removing cash registers, ATMs, tobacco products and other miscellaneous items, Chicago police said.

Police believe four to eight people clad in dark clothing, including hoodies and masks have been breaking into the businesses.

  • Keep the perimeter of your property well lit.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately.
  • Keep doors and windows secured.
  • Immediately repair any broken windows, doors or locks.
  • If video surveillance is available, save and make a copy of the incident for investigating detectives.
  • If you have been burglarized, don’t touch anything and call police immediately
  • If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information.
