Toddler Found Shot Inside Marquette Park Residence, Chicago Man Charged

CHICAGO—A 38-year-old man is facing multiple gun charges after a 1-year-old girl was found shot early Saturday morning in Marquette Park, Chicago police said.

Officers went to the 6400 block of South Mozart Avenue a few minutes after midnight Saturday, where they found a toddler with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

Davaris Washington was taken into custody at the scene. A gun was found at the scene, police said.

Washington has since been charged with with reckless discharge of firearm, unlawful use of weapon-machine gun/automatic weapon, reckless conduct/great bodly harm and possessio of a firearm by a repeat felon, all felonies.

Area One detectives are investigating. Washington is due in court Monday afternoon for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building.
