Chicago Police Officer Shot Near Chicago State

A Chicago police officer was shot in the hand late Wednesday night on the South Side.

CHICAGO, IL - Chicago police units were transporting a wounded Chicago police officer to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn late Wednesday night after the officer was reportedly shot in the hand in the 9500 block of South Calumet Avenue on the South Side. The location of the shooting is just blocks from the campus of Chicago State University.

A suspect is in custody, according to police scanner traffic from the 9th District.

Two Facebook groups that frequently follow Chicago police scanner traffic, Tri-State Fire Alerts and Mt. Greenwood Watch, reported the shooting occurred around 11:23 p.m. The suspect was taken into custody near 96th and Prairie around 11:37 p.m., according to the reports.

The suspect on scanner traffic was described as being black, 25-30 years old, about 6'2" and weighing between 150 and 170 pounds.

The shooting occurred after a brief foot chase, Chicago Police Department Chief Communications Officer Anthony Guglielmi said. The officer who was shot was in good condition after he was taken to Christ.
