Dolton Cop Shot Outside His South Side Home

A Dolton police officer is in the hospital after exchanging gunfire with two attackers near 76th and Calumet.

CHICAGO, IL - A police officer in southeast suburban Dolton was shot several times early Monday morning when he was confronted by an armed man outside his home in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood. The off-duty officer, identified by the Chicago Tribune as Det. Darryl Hope, was listed as in good condition Monday morning at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Chicago police said the victim was standing on the sidewalk in the 7600 block of South Calumet at 12:09 a.m. when a man approached him. The two exchanged gunfire and Hope was originally taken to Christ in serious condition with wounds to his abdomen and left arm.

The Tribune reported there were two men who attacked Hope. Police did not immediately provide a description of them.

"Considering that he was dressed in civilian clothing, no one would know that he was a police officer. He seemed like another easy target," Dolton Police Chief Robert Collins told the paper.

Police say Area South detectives are continuing the investigation Monday morning.
