Hospital workers shed light on STEM careers

Advocate Trinity Hospital health professionals motivate youth at Museum of Science and Industry event.

Advocate Trinity Hospital health professionals motivated young science enthusiasts and shed some light on the many career opportunities in health care, during the Museum of Science and Industry’s recent Science Works exhibit promoting careers in in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

During the event, laboratory scientists, nurses and technicians representing Advocate Trinity’s Cardiology, Phlebotomy and Rehab Services departments talked to young participants about their roles and contributions to patient care. They also discussed educational requirements, offered words of encouragement and promoted healthy living from three separate career stations.

“We met with young children through adulthood who were engaged and thrilled to see the work we do behind the scenes. I look forward to the next community initiative that will allow me to bring awareness to future generations of medical professionals,” said Brandy Jones, director of the Advocate Trinity Laboratory.

Science Works is a museum -wide career celebration that empowers youth and their families to discover what interesting jobs the STEM fields have to offer. In conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, Science Works features dynamic speakers, hands-on activities and one-on-one discussions.

In addition to providing insights into their career paths, Advocate Trinity Cardiology nurses offered hands-only CPR training program. Nearly 100 adults and children learned the basics of CPR and earned training completion certificates.

“Our team here at Advocate Trinity is engaged and truly interested in promoting the well-being of our community and it shows as we consistently engage in community events that educate and promote prevention and health literacy,” says Michele Roe, director of Advocate Trinity nursing operations.

This marks the second consecutive year of Advocate Trinity’s participation in the museum’s Hispanic Heritage Month outreach and celebration. The hospital participates in similar activities during Black History Month and has become a fan-favorite exhibit.
