'Mr. March': Matt Davidson Hits 3 HRs To Lift White Sox In Opener

The White Sox' Matt Davidson became the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit three home runs in a game in March.

KANSAS CITY, MO - Reggie Jackson became forever known as "Mr. October" when he hit three home runs in a game for the New York Yankees in the 1977 World Series and Derek Jeter followed 24 years later as "Mr. November" after a few clutch hits for the Yankees in the first MLB postseason played during that month.
So by the same token, could Chicago White Sox third baseman Matt Davidson become "Mr. March?"

Davidson became the first MLB player ever to hit three home runs in a game during that month after a trio of homers during the White Sox' 14-7 route of the host Kansas City Royals in Thursday afternoon's Opening Day game.

Granted the stakes are much, much lower in March than they are in October or November, but Davidson still must be feeling pretty well about himself being on pace to hit 486 home runs this year. ALSO ON PATCH: 5 Things White Sox Fans Can Look Forward To This Season

While Davidson is the first to have a three home run game in March, he's not the only player in baseball history to hit three out of the park on Opening Day. George Bell for the Toronto Blue Jays in 1988, Tuffy Rhodes for the Chicago Cubs in 1994 and Dmitri Young for the Detroit Tigers all pulled that off, according to the White Sox' team Twitter account.

The White Sox' domination at the plate on Opening Day wasn't limited to just Davidson, however. Shortstop Tim Anderson hit two home runs and first baseman Jose Abreu hit one as the White Sox tied an MLB record for hitting six home runs as a team on Opening Day. The only other team to accomplish that feat was the 1988 New York Mets.

The team shared a number of other statistical highlights with historical perspective on Twitter.

James Shields earned the victory on the mound, rebounding from a rough first inning that saw the Royals jump out to a 4-0 lead. The White Sox followed with 14 unanswered runs before the Royals capped off the scoring with three tallies in the final two innings.
