Park May Be Renamed After Female Cop Who Died In Line Of Duty
Irma Ruiz was shot and killed by a school shooter in Chicago and may have a park named in her honor 30 years later.

CHICAGO, IL - A Chicago police officer who lost her life while saving several kids in a 1988 school shooting may have a park on the city's Southwest Side named after her. The process of renaming Walnut Park at 3801 W. 45th St. in the Archer Heights neighborhood after Irma Ruiz may begin soon, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune. Park officials may soon take public comments both for and against the name change over a 45-day period.
Ruiz, who lived in Beverly and whose children attended Christ the King, Mount Carmel and Maria, was shot in the chest and killed by a gunman at Moses Montefiore School on the Near West Side in 1988. The school shooting was part of a day-long terror spree that included multiple fatal victims at multiple locations at the hands of the gunman. The gunman was killed by Ruiz' partner, Greg Jaglowski, who has been part of the effort to rename the park in her memory.
