CHICAGO — Chicago police have released video footage of a person believed to have fatally shot a Chicago police officer as he was returning home from work early Sunday morning.

Officer Luis Huesca, 30, had just gotten off duty when he was attacked in the 5500 block of South Kedzie Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood. Responding to a shot spotter alert, police found the gravely wounded officer in the 3100 block of West 56th Street, according to police. Huesca was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His vehicle was stolen at the scene.

Although Huesca was still in uniformm he was wearing "something that covered it up" when he was attacked and his vehicle was stolen, Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling said Sunday during a news conference.

It is unclear if the officer was the victim or a carjacking, or exactly what the motive was, police said.

Video taken from what appears to be a convenience store camera shows a Black male wearing glasses and a backpack. The person is wearing different outerwear in two video scenarios that appear to have been captured at different hours on Sunday. Police said the person should be considered armed and dangerous.
