CHICAGO — A 60-year-old retired Chicago police officer was shot Thursday morning when he tried to stop a robbery on the South Side, police said in a news briefing.

Around 7:30 a.m., a 58-year-old woman was about to enter a currency exchange at 71st and Wentworth in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, when a dark-colored SUV drove up. Two men got out of the vehicle and displayed a gun.

CPD Deputy Chief Fred McLean said the men announced a robbery, prompting the retired Chicago police officer to intervene. An exchange of gunfire ensued, and the retired officer was shot multiple times. The two men got back into the SUV and fled.
