CHICAGO — A 46-year-old man was shot during an exchange of gunfire with another man who was trying to steal his car Saturday afternoon at Ford City Mall, Chicago police said.

Around 12:40 p.m., the vehicle owner was walking toward his parked car across the J.C. Penney lot when he saw a man trying to break into his car, police said. The vehicle owner, who police say is a FOID and CCL holder, and the other man exchanged gunfire. The other man entered a nearby vehicle and fled the scene, until crashing in the 7900 block of South Pulaski Road, police said.

Three were taken into custody at the crash scene. One of the three in custody suffered a graze wound to his had. He was also taken to a nearby hospital in good condition.

The owner of the vehicle was shot in the hand and thigh. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in fair condition.

Charges are pending.
