South Side Girl, 11, Shot in Head Over Weekend Dies

Takiya Holmes was hit by a stray bullet Saturday while sitting with her mother and brother in a parked car.

CHICAGO, IL — The 11-year-old girl who was one of two young South Side girls shot over the weekend has died from her injuries at Stroger Hospital, according to the Chicago Tribune.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, a stray bullet struck Takiya Holmes in the head as she sat with her mom and younger brother in a parked car in the 6500 block of South King Drive in Parkway Gardens neighborhood, the report stated. The shooting happened as Takiya's mom was giving a friend a ride to work the report added.

Only a half hour earlier Saturday, Kanari Gentry Bowers, 12, was playing basketball with friends at Henderson Elementary School in the West Englewood neighborhood when she was shot, the report stated. Kanari was still in critical condition Tuesday, the report added.

According to relatives, she died in her mother's arms in Tuesday morning, the report added.

Police don't believe the shootings were related, and in both cases, the girls were never the unintended targets in the incidents, the report stated. Investigators have been checking city police cameras from both crime scenes, as well as searching for any other security or surveillance video taken at the time shootings, the report added.
