West Pullman Elementary Building Now A City Landmark

The former West Pullman Elementary School building at 119th and Parnell has been granted landmark status by the Chicago City Council.

CHICAGO, IL - The former West Pullman Elementary School building is now an official city of Chicago landmark. The City Council voted to grant landmark status to the building at 11917-51 S. Parnell Avenue that operated as a school until 2013, according to a news release from Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office.

The block-long building features masonry details embellished with stone, molded brick, terra cotta and decorative metal. According to the release it "illustrates a progressive period of school design and innovation from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries."

It was built in 1894 by architect W. August Fiedler and has undergone two additions, the first in 1900 and the most recent one in 1923. Current proposals include plans to turn the former school into affordable senior apartments.
