Yoko Ono Unveils Her New Sculpture at Jackson Park

CHICAGO, IL — A new sculpture by Yoko Ono officially became a South Side attraction as the public art installation in Jackson Park was unveiled Monday morning.

The artist — along with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and representatives from the Chicago Park District and Project 120, a nonprofit aimed at revitalizing South Side parks — was part of a ceremony introducing "Sky Landing," her sculpture that sits at the north end of Jackson Park's Wooded Island in the Garden of the Phoenix. The installation consists of 12 steel lotus petals with mounds forming yin-yang patterns at the north and south.

" 'Sky Landing' is a place where the sky and Earth meet and create a seed to learn about the past and come together to create a future of peace and harmony, with nature and each other," Ono said in a release from the mayor's office. "Peace among all people and nations begins with peace in our hearts, streets and parks."

The sculpture is Ono’s first permanent public installation in North and South America. The artwork also is part of Emanuel's $29 million revitalization plan for Jackson Park, which will include habitat restoration, landscape improvements and tree plantings.

"With great works of art like 'Sky Landing,' we provide residents and visitors growing access to arts and culture in neighborhoods across Chicago," Emanuel said in a statement. "We look forward to continued work with Project 120 on improving our historic parks and bringing history, art and nature together in our public spaces."
