1. Springfield DMV adds tax payments, cutting extra trips (sj-r.com) β If you're buying a vehicle in Springfield, you can now pay your vehicle use tax at the same Flagship Center on Dirksen Parkway where you handle title and registration. A new in-house Illinois Department of Revenue office lets you complete paperwork and taxes in one stop, with multiple payment options and regular DMV hours.

2. Former downtown Springfield bank building sold (capitolcitynow.com) β A former PNC Bank building near Springfield's Old State Capitol Plaza has been bought out of foreclosure for about $1.65 million and is now roughly 98% occupied, including DCFS and other tenants. Investor Chris Stone, who often works with state agencies, is also pursuing a major TIF-supported renovation of the vacant former AT&T building on South 7th Street.

3. Man Tries to Outrun the Police on His Bicycle (newschannel20.com) β A Springfield police officer arrested a 37-year-old man with outstanding Sangamon County burglary warrants after spotting him riding a bicycle on a sidewalk near Wheeler and Monroe. When the rider tried to flee by bike and on foot, the officer stopped him and reportedly found meth and a syringe, leading to additional drug charges.

4. Illinois man arrested after bringing gun to State Fair (lincolncourier.com) β A man was arrested at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield after troopers say he ran from officers who suspected he had a gun in his bag. The 21-year-old from Rochester faces weapons and resisting charges, with a preliminary hearing set for Sept. 3 in Springfield. Fair officials have recently tightened security, including a clear bag policy for Grandstand events.

5. New landscape waste deal for Springfield (capitolcitynow.com) β Springfield has locked in a new three-year, $4.15 million deal with Waste Management to handle landscape waste collection, replacing Lake Area Disposal. Residents can expect every-other-week pickup, with monthly service in January and February, as the company adds two new trucks dedicated to Springfield routes.
