Crime Stoppers seeking tips on sign theft (wcia.com) β€” Springfield police and Sangamon/Menard County Crime Stoppers are asking for your help identifying two people who stole a sign from the Sangamon Club on East Adams Street early Aug. 15. Surveillance images show a man and woman removing the mounted sign, and anonymous tips that lead to an arrest could earn up to $2,500.

Springfield 19th Street railroad corridor moves closer to redevelopment (wandtv.com) β€” Springfield's long-problematic 19th Street railroad corridor on the East Side is finally under a $100,000 feasibility study that could remove tracks or add an underpass or overpass. Residents and officials hope new trails and better connections will reduce noise, traffic delays, and long-standing inequities between the East and West sides, with results expected in December.

3. Sex offender arrested in Springfield, another wanted after leaving Illinois (wcia.com) β€” Sangamon County authorities have arrested registered sex offender Frederick E. Britz for failing to register and living too close to a playground, while another Springfield offender, Randall E. Knott, remains wanted after leaving Illinois without authorization. Residents are urged to share any information on Knott's whereabouts with Crime Stoppers or the sheriff's office.

Springfield man dies after crashing motorcycle (sj-r.com) β€” A 42-year-old Springfield man, William McCarthy, died after a Sept. 5 motorcycle crash near Illinois 54 and Camp Butler Road, shortly after arriving at HSHS St. John's Hospital. An autopsy found he suffered multiple blunt force injuries, and the Sangamon County Coroner and Springfield Police Department are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

UIS sees freshman enrollment jump over 13%, second-largest class in school history (wandtv.com) β€” The University of Illinois Springfield is welcoming its second-largest freshman class ever, with 353 new students boosting undergraduate enrollment and increasing diversity on campus. While total enrollment dipped due to fewer international graduate students, UIS is expanding offerings, including a new applied engineering degree in 2027 and in-state tuition for students from select neighboring-state counties, strengthening Springfield's role as a regional education hub.
