Meet Sully — Friends of Sangamon County Animal Control Dog of the Week (capitolcitynow.com) — If you're looking for a new walking buddy in Springfield, Sully, a young Lab mix, is waiting at Sangamon County Animal Control's full kennels. You can meet him and other adoptable dogs at the Shale Street shelter during regular weekday and Saturday hours, with both foster and adoption options available.
2. The Outlet Academy launches to work with expelled students (illinoistimes.com) — Expelled Springfield District 186 students now have a new path forward through The Outlet Academy, a community-run program on South Sixth Street that lets them keep earning credits and life skills. Funded in part by the district and transitioned from the NAACP, the academy blends academics, mental health support, and career exploration to help teens return to school or graduate.
3. ImpactLife blood drives offer donation chances in area (sj-r.com) — Springfield residents can donate blood at West Side Christian Church on Sept. 25, joining a weeklong series of ImpactLife drives across central Illinois. Additional opportunities are available in Pleasant Plains and Taylorville, and donors can also log their contributions toward a Big Ten-themed national blood drive competition with perks like limited-edition T-shirts.
4. Community Foundation hires grants manager (springfieldbusinessjournal.com) — Springfield's Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln has hired Tobias Lewis as its new grants and scholarships manager, strengthening support for local nonprofits and students. Lewis, who previously interned in Sen. Tammy Duckworth's Springfield office, will coordinate competitive grantmaking and scholarship programs that channel resources into causes across the region.
5. Firebells set WPBL record with 20 hits to force winner-take-all Game 5 (mlb.com) — Springfield baseball fans just watched the San Francisco Firebells pound out a record 20 hits at Robin Roberts Stadium to force a decisive Game 5 in the Women's Professional Baseball League championship. The winner-take-all finale is set for Tuesday night, with both teams expected to lean on rested bullpens and star pitchers as they chase the league's first-ever title.
