Salvation Army store on Wabash to close (springfieldbusinessjournal.com) — Springfield shoppers and donors will lose the Salvation Army Family Store on Wabash Avenue when it closes Oct. 24, though the organization hopes to reopen elsewhere in town. Core services at the Clear Lake Avenue facility, including the food pantry, youth programs, worship, and partner programs like Meals on Wheels, will continue, but thrift donations are paused until a new site is secured.
2. CWLP celebrating Public Power Week and its community benefits (springfieldherald.news) — Springfield's City Water, Light, and Power is marking Public Power Week by spotlighting its lower-than-average electric rates, strong reliability, and community-focused service. Leaders note CWLP's nonprofit, locally governed structure keeps Springfield's power affordable while a new Integrated Resource Plan will guide future energy, sustainability, and reliability decisions that affect residents' costs and quality of service.
3. Springfield Fire Department Announces Promotions (springfieldherald.news) — Springfield's Fire Department has promoted 20 firefighters, including 11 new Driver Engineers, eight Captains, and one Battalion Chief, strengthening leadership across the ranks. City leaders praised their dedication at a recent ceremony, noting these promotions will shape how crews respond to emergencies and protect Springfield neighborhoods going forward.
4. Muddy River Blitz: QND beats Springfield with complete effort in all facets (muddyriversports.com) — Springfield High's Senators fell 37-14 at home to Quincy Notre Dame, which jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead at Memorial Stadium and never let go. Despite two second-half touchdown passes by Springfield's Jacob Scheffler, penalties and a strong QND defense kept the Senators from mounting a comeback in this Central State Eight matchup.
5. Lincoln Land Community College To Host Illinois Health Educators Conference (taylorvilledailynews.com) — Springfield will host the Illinois Health Care Educators Conference on November 6 at the Northfield Inn, Suites, and Conference Center, organized by Lincoln Land Community College. Health educators from across Illinois will gather for a full day of sessions, networking, and continuing education credits, with registration open to the public through October 22.
