Every 5 Minutes an Illinois Woman is Diagnosed with Lung Cancer
Illinois Celebrates Lung Cancer Advocates, Turns Turquoise to Raise Awareness

In the last 40 years, lung cancer in women has increased 94 percent, and now impacts an estimated 8,500 people in Illinois. To raise awareness of the number one cancer killer, the American Lung Association in Illinois is celebrating people impacted by lung cancer and also turning Springfield turquoise during National Women’s Lung Health Week (May 6-12).
During the week, the Lung Association is celebrating local advocates who have been impacted by lung cancer, including Shawne P. who lost her mother to lung cancer.
“My Mom was an amazing, outgoing, young woman still in her 50s that was taken away from her children and many grandchildren way too soon,” she said. “I vividly fight for research and the cure of cancer!”
