Illinois Launches New Digital Tools During Problem Gambling Awareness Month

Illinois officials are marking March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month with a renewed push to connect residents to confidential help

SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois officials are marking March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month with a renewed push to connect residents to confidential help and support services—including a new partnership introducing a digital tool designed to help people better understand and manage their gambling behavior.

The statewide awareness campaign is led by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) alongside the Illinois Lottery, Illinois Gaming Board, and Illinois Racing Board. Throughout March, state agencies and community partners will promote prevention, recovery resources, and responsible gaming practices across Illinois.

A centerpiece of this year’s effort is a new collaboration between IDHS and the behavioral health technology company Evive, which has helped launch a mobile app aimed at supporting individuals who may be struggling with gambling habits. The app provides tools that allow users to monitor gambling behaviors, improve mental wellness, and access treatment resources if they need help.

Officials say the goal is to make support easier to access, especially for people who may hesitate to seek help through traditional channels.

“Recovery is possible, and no one has to face a gambling disorder alone,” said IDHS Secretary Dulce M. Quintero. “Our goal is to ensure every person in Illinois knows that confidential support and treatment are available when they’re ready to seek help.”

The Evive app is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play and is part of the state’s broader “Are You Really Winning?” campaign, which focuses on raising awareness about the risks associated with problem gambling.

The need for services remains significant. Research cited by the state estimates that roughly 400,000 Illinois residents—about 4% of the population—have a gambling disorder, while another 700,000 residents are considered at risk.

Illinois has expanded treatment capacity in response. Over the past five years, more than 950 clinicians have been trained to provide gambling disorder treatment services statewide. In State Fiscal Year 2025 alone, treatment providers conducted more than 64,000 screenings and assessments related to gambling issues.

Other initiatives during Problem Gambling Awareness Month include a statewide art contest highlighting recovery and resilience, educational campaigns from the Illinois Lottery, and teal lighting displays on buildings in downtown Chicago to symbolize support for people in recovery.

Support services remain available year-round. Individuals seeking help can contact the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline, access online resources, or use the new Evive app to connect with confidential assistance.
