Smoking Age Increase Approved By Illinois Senate

The plan would raise the legal age from 18 to 21.

SPRINGFIELD, IL — The legal drinking age and the legal smoking age in Illinois could soon be the same. THe Illinois Senate voted 35-20 Wednesday to ban tobacco sales to anyone under age 21. The ban would extend to e-cigarettes and vaping materials.

Five states and 14 Illinois cities, including Chicago, already have an under-21 tobacco sales ban, according to WGN. Bolingbrook also recently passed a similar ordinance.

The bill now heads to the Illinois House for a vote.
