Are 25 Stops Too Many for St. Charles Wine Crawl?

Shakou Sushi is planning a Winter Wine Down but first needs approval from the city.

St. Charles officials are debating whether they should allow a popular restaurant in town to host a wine crawl that would include a one-ounce pour of wine at 25 different stops.

Shakou Sushi is looking to host a “Wine Down Winter” event on March 4, which would include 25 different non-restaurant businesses all within walking distance where event goers could go for a taste of different wines, Shakou co-owner Ed Hartigan told the Daily Herald.

But some city officials are taking issue with the fact that a 1-ounce drink at every location would add up to a full bottle of wine.

"My concerns are that it is too many stops," said Alderman and liquor Commissioner Maureen Lewis. "Twenty-five locations in those several square blocks seems a little too much.”

Mayor Ray Rogina, the city’s top liquor commissioner, supports the event and says visitors would likely draw business and stop out to St. Charles restaurants following the event, according to the Daily Herald. The full city council will still need to vote on a special event permit for the “wine down.”
