ST. CHARLES, IL — A report of a suspicious device in downtown St. Charles late Friday night led to evacuations, road closures, and a multi-agency response, according to police.
The St. Charles Police Department was called to the 200 block of W. Main Street at about 10:40 p.m. after a suspicious item was discovered in a flower planter, according to a news release from police.
Officers quickly secured the area out of an abundance of caution and nearby residences and businesses were evacuated while authorities established a safety perimeter.
Several downtown roadways were temporarily closed during the investigation, including Main Street from 3rd Street to Riverside Avenue and 2nd Street from Indiana Street to Cedar Street, police said.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad and the Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to assist at the scene and evaluate the device, according to a news release. Authorities later confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The area has since been reopened.
The FBI, working in coordination with the St. Charles Police Department, will continue to investigate the incident.
